Persistence and Success

Persistence and Success by Arthur Cooper (c) Copyright 2005 http://www.arthurcooper.com/< /a>

Ask yourself. What makes one man succeed and another not (whatever your definition of success)?

What makes a top sportsman, a world-class musician, or a successful entrepreneur?

Basic ability alone is not enough, although this is of course essential. Many sportsmen rise to a high level, even a high professional level, as a result of their natural ability and without excessive effort, but still never go that little bit higher still up to the very top. Many people with a musical talent play to a standard that would give most people a great sense of achievement, but still never quite get equal the very best. Many would be entrepreneurs and businessmen never really make it either, and many of them give up.

What all successful sportsmen and musicians have is persistence. When others give up, they don't. Top sportsmen and musicians practice their skills for hours and hours at a time. They never rest on their laurels. They are always trying to get that little bit closer to perfection. Above all they do not give up.

So it is in business. What separates the successes from the failures is the ability to carry on when things go wrong. Nine times out of ten it is his ability to keep going when others give up that mark him out for

eventual success. How many people are there who have tried to start their own businesses, failed, and then given up completely? Many, many is the answer.

Yet look at some of the most successful entrepreneurs and you will often find a string of unsuccessful ventures before their business career really took off. They tried, they failed, they picked themselves up, and they tried again. They had a determination to succeed and would not be beaten.

Any salesman will tell you that to make one sale there may be tens or even hundreds of unsuccessful sales pitches. They know from experience how difficult it is to keep going in the face of failure after failure. They know the value of persistence. They know that the next approach may lead to the big sale.

So it is in any business. Long hours of slog before being rewarded by the sudden success of big returns.

So stick with it and don't give up. It is easy to say, and harder to do, and is only one ingredient among many in the receipt of success, but without this absolute determination and perseverance your chances of success are drastically reduced.
